The city and its western neighbor are the principal cities of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of approximately 2.5 million.

Although many have considered the city of Aurora to simply be Denver's larger suburbs, its growing population in recent decades (now over half the size of the City of Denver) has increased its status as almost equal to that of its neighbor Denver.
